Making Your Own Ground Cover Foliage

Making Your Own Ground Cover Foliage

Above is a photo showing one of the types of ground covers that I have made slightly hanging of the cliff edge as well as ground cover. Spray this one brown and didn’t place any flocking on this one until I glued it down, then I sprayed some hair spray on to it and then sprinkle some ground up leaves on top of it and then re sprayed it again with the hair spray. When I come to sealing all my work I will seal this as well.

Below is a photo of what this foliage looks like after you have made it. Then when you want to place this foliage in your train layout or war diorama or even in your dolls house garden you simply pull it apart and glue it down using your Sticky PVA Glue.

To make your own ground cover foliage you will need the following Items:

String or Rope

-       Cheap hair spray (You will be using as glue)

Baking paper

-       Flocking (The direction on how to make your own flocking are in my blog “Making The Flocking For Your Train Layout” 11th of December 2020. The colour of my flocking depended on what I was trying to achieve whether that was some dry looking weed type ground cover like in the photo up the top or like the photo at the bottom of this page.

-         Paints: Burnt Umber, Raw Umber, any browns or greens that you might want the under foliage to be, this is underneath the flocking

First you will need to cut your string or your rope which ever you are using into approximately 2 centimeter strips, but this doesn’t have to be the same sizes all the time.

Now you need to unravel untwist your string or your rope and as you are unraveling it let it drop into a storage container. You will need all least 2 containers full of unraveled string or rope, as you will properly use a lot of ground cover foliage, it really is good quick ground filler.

Once you have finished unraveling your string or rope you will grab a hand full of it and lay it out on some baking paper and flatten it a little to make it look more like ground cover or lol a hair piece. Then spray it all over both on top and underneath with the hair spray. And while it is still wet dip it into your flocking. Then set aside to dry for at least a couple of hours but is better to leave 24 hours. Then it is ready for you to pull apart and glue down with Sticky PVA glue on you layout or diorama or dolls house garden.

Different types of ground cover on the side of our mountain in the bottom photo I used the same foliage but in dark purple for the grapes and dark green for the leaves to make all of the grape vines.

I truly hope you found this helpful and if you have any question please feel free to leave them in the comments below. Take care and have a fun time creating.

Who Remembers The Mr Whippy Van

Who Remembers The Mr. Whippy Van Who remembers the Mr. Whippy van driving around the neighborhood of Melbourne, Victoria? I do, it was one of my precious memories of growing up. He would play his music on his loud speaker so that everyone no matter where you were could hear that Mr. Whippy was coming. We would all run out of the house so watch him coming especially on those really hot afternoons. While you would wait you could see all the other children and parents running out to their nature strips to purchase one of his yummy soft serve ice creams. Sometimes my parents would buy us all one and sometimes they wouldn’t. Now as a grownup I realize that they couldn’t always afford to buy us all one. But that still didn’t stop us from running out to watch Mr. Whippy do his thing. Mr. Whippy looked the splitting image of Elvis Presley. We used to think he had left his job and come to serve us ice cream and sing to us in Tottenham. Because we didn’t r
